We Restore.

I was born in Kealakekua Bay — raised by the tides, taught by the moon, and guided by my kūpuna. For 79 years, I have practiced the lawaiʻa lifestyle, from the early days of Leslie Brothers Fishing to today with Project Lanui.

My work is not just about catching fish. It is about weaving history into every net, teaching the next generation to listen to the ocean, and protecting what we love — because that is how our people survive.

Project Lanui is my legacy in motion — a vessel built for education, healing, and transformation. It's not just a boat. It is how we return to what matters.

CHUCK

Aloha, I'm

Project Lanui is our vessel — literally and symbolically. We are transforming how our community engages with the bay by building a boat rooted in lawaiʻa values and fueled by generations of ʻike kūpuna. It is a floating classroom, a restoration platform, and a symbol of return.

Through time, Through Lineage

Transforming Kealakekua

At ʻIke Lawaiʻa, we are intentional about preserving this through culture, education, and ʻāina restoration.

Since 1911, Uncle Chuck and the Leslie ʻohana have carried forward a way of life — fishing, storytelling, teaching, making nets, and living in rhythm with Kealakekua. Project Lanui continues this legacy with the same respect for intentionality, innovation, and relationship.

How you can help

  • Donate to Project Lanui – Fund the boat, supplies, and educational programs
  • Sponsor a net-making workshop – Give a class of students access to our knowledge
  • Volunteer or collaborate – Join restoration events or propose a project
  • Share our story – Help amplify the voices of Kealakekua
